Spring Break 2012

For Spring Break, Tahoe finally delivered some snow -- just in the nick of time for us to use up our ski passes.

We spent time at Alpine and Squaw, and had fun skiing with the Su Family on one of those days. Helen and Ella were well matched and made quite a few “mountain runs”.

Chris and I both got to “demo” new gear, which is always fun. Apparently I had completely worn out the bindings on my old skies, which I didn’t even know you could do. Good thing I forgot my ski boots one day or I would never have figured this out.

We enjoyed having a few mellow days as a family on the ski slopes, and finding yummy places to eat at night with the help of Yelp. Thai food and sushi make very good ski companions.

Egg-stra-ordinary!

Right before spring break, Helen turned in her “egg project” which involved some experimentation with eggs, a detailed presentation on egg anatomy, and making a scrumptious stratta to share with the class. Food = Science = Fun.

Helen and I experienced this “first” together – a Renaissance Fair. Given the proximity of the event, and Helen’s love of knights, armor, and anything “historical”, it seemed like the right thing to do. The presence of archery, a game tent, tug-of-war, and her friend Finn made it all the more special.

In other “downtown haps” the San Pedro Market continues to gain steam with a new Saturday Farmer’s Market that fills a much-needed void. With our newly operational bikes, we managed to work in some fitness as well as fresh produce. We love being localvores!

Cirque du Soliel 2012 -- Totem

We love it when the circus comes to town!  The Cirque tent is so close to home that it feels like our own neighborhood pop-up party.  Totem was another great show and we are still talking about the stunning trapeze artists, and the unicycle riders who managed to flip bowls on their head while keeping themselves aloft the world’s tallest one-wheeled bikes.

We took full advantage of the entertainment proximity with a pre-party at Los Tios’ house.  Roseann was here from Texas, and we all had a chance to toast to Miguel’s exciting graduate school news.

Helen's First Cocktail Party

As a group of walkers, there were no worries for us with the bubbles! We even made it to Cirque before the rain started. Helen did well on the cocktail circuit with a cup of juice, a snazzy new coat, and good conversation with her favorite adults.

Earlier in the day, Suzanne and Chris hosted a lovely shower for Vuthy and Desirae as they get ready to welcome Avah into the world.

Helen’s first Brownie sleepover was a great success. It wasn’t exactly a “roughing it” kind of experience (being located in the gym) but for some girls it was their first night away from home and they all did great. After a movie, popcorn, a story, and the right amount of whispering, it was lights out at 10:45, and we didn’t hear a peep until morning. How do I know this? I got to be a sleepover chaperone – something that only I could enjoy with my excellent sleeping skills!
